My Family's Medication Error Tales

July 16, 2018

What I learned from my dad's summer of Parkinson's Psychosis and my son's years of ADHD misdiagnosis

Please listen to Episode 13 of
the podcast Overprescribed as I share stories filled with helpful information for patients about my father’s battle with Parkinson’s Psychosis due to being over-medicated and my son’s struggle with an ADHD medication due to misdiagnosis.

It took years for the doctors to figure out my dad was battling Parkinson's Disease (PD). He was not alone. Since PD is a progressive disease, the correct diagnosis can take years. Also, studies indicate that 25 to 50 percent of Parkinson's patients are misdiagnosed. Once he was properly diagnosed, he was overmedicated with serious consequences for his life and health. What happened, how we figured it out, and the "happy ending" are included in the podcast. If you are a patient with Parkinson's Disease, or caring for someone who is, don't miss it.

If you follow my blog, you know my son was misdiagnosed over 15 times the first 15 years of his life. That includes the years his doctors were certain he had ADHD. When your child is given a new medicine, does she know what to tell you if she experiences any side effects? My son's reaction to his new ADHD medicine in middle school is a story you'll want to share with other parents.

Please listen to the podcast and let me know what you think. Share your stories with me below or go to my Contact page.

The Upshot: If you're not properly diagnosed, then you're likely to receive the wrong medication. Medicines can treat symptoms but without knowing what truly ails you, your situation will probably only worsen.
