It took years for the doctors to figure out my dad was battling Parkinson's Disease (PD). He was not alone. Since PD is a progressive disease, the correct diagnosis can take years. Also, studies indicate that 25 to 50 percent of Parkinson's patients are misdiagnosed. Once he was properly diagnosed, he was overmedicated with serious consequences for his life and health. The Upshot: If you're not properly diagnosed, then you're likely to receive the wrong medication. Medicines can treat symptoms but without knowing what truly ails you, your situation will probably only worsen.
